As you get older you may find that your brain isn’t performing as well as it used to – and that’s not unusual.

As we age, the body goes through many changes. However, that doesn’t mean that you are powerless to keep your brain younger. With just a few moves discussed in the tips below, you will find that your brain function will improve as you enjoy increased brain power and avoid age-related issues.

Best of all, you can start right now!

Get Your Zzz’s

Never, ever discount the power of sleep for your brain and body. You need that rest so your body can recharge. The negative impact of sleep deprivation on the brain – and the body for that matter – can be quite harmful.

Even minor sleep deprivation has been shown to lead to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, and more.

Getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep a night helps lower your risk for these conditions and gives your brain and body their best chance of staying healthy.

Eat Brain-Boosting Foods

While you probably know the foods that you should eat for a healthier brain like fish, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and fruit, it is equally important to avoid certain foods.

Highly processed foods and foods containing fructose can age your brain and cause neurological damage, as well as harm your body.

Choose fresh and whole foods whenever possible to give your brain the nourishment it requires.

Stay Hydrated

Even low-level dehydration can cause symptoms in the brain and body. Your brain is composed of 73% water, proving your brain (and other vital organs) need sufficient water to function properly.

When you don’t get enough clean, fresh water, your body will suffer and you will see the effects in your weight, skin, energy level, and brain function. Give your body and brain what it needs to serve you best.

Aim to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day.

Stay Social

Did you know that social interaction has been proven to keep your brain young? It’s true!

Go to lunch, have coffee or tea with them, or just have them over to visit. If you can’t meet in person, a phone call is the next best thing. Humans are social creatures, and we need that human contact to stay healthy mentally and yes, physically too.

Reach out and connect with someone at least once a week.

Do Some Mental Gymnastics (and physical activity doesn’t hurt either!)

There’s a lot you can do to keep your mind active. Work jigsaw puzzles, do a crossword puzzle, take a walk, and write in your journal.

Neurofeedback is a great tool that can help you find relief from symptoms like depression, anxiety, and ADHD so you don’t have the added stress on your brain and body that drains you and ages you mentally. It is safe, non-invasive, and pain-free.

Give your brain a workout to alleviate mental stress that is weighing you down and aging your brain before its time.
